After the announcement on Tuesday, the district officials of Winslow have to close School #2 due to mold spores detected in an air quality test.

The issue of possible mold contamination in the school was not disclosed and the district is doing their best to resolve the issue. It came to a necessity of closing the school as administrators decided to immediately conduct a clean up to remove items that can contribute to mold growth.

Classes are expected to resume on Monday when the clean up and follow-up air tests should already be done. The school administrators want to ensure a safe environment for the students and teachers and to avoid any mold allergy that might develop.

WINSLOW — For the second time since the start of the new school year, a South Jersey school has been shuttered due to mold issues.

District officials in Winslow announced Tuesday that School #2 will be closed for the rest of the week after mold spores were detected in air samples taken from the building.

Superintendent Dr. H. Major Poteat said that work was to begin at the school Tuesday evening “to remove stationary cabinetry and any other items that may promote the growth of mold spores.”

“The building will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and follow-up air quality testing will be conducted,” Poteat said.

Principal Robert Ricciardi reported to the district that an unusual odor was detected in the building. An environmentalist was dispatched to School #2, who would later determine mold spores were present.

CHICAGO, Sept. 13 (UPI) — An allergist is warning people with allergies in the Chicago area to stay indoors and use air conditioning because of mold and smoke in the air.

Dr. Joseph Leija, who performs the official allergy count for the Midwest from Loyola’s Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, says smoke clouds that resemble San Francisco fog are rolling into Chicago from a Minnesota forest fire.

“The smoke will further aggravate respiratory systems, whether you suffer from allergies or asthma, or are normally healthy,” Leija said in a statement. “Everyone should try to avoid breathing the contaminated air, stay indoors and use the air conditioning to act as a filter.”
